Social Media: The next “My dog ate my homework”

Posted by Sean Lin in English 10 on Thursday, January 10th, 2013 at 3:04 pm

Procrastination.

One of the main reasons why I can’t finish my homework. What’s causing me to procrastinate? Social Media.

Imagine this, you’re reading an online article for your english class, and right after the first few sentences, you see the bouncing Skype icon on your dock and so you pressed it. You start chatting and then you realize that you haven’t finish reading the article. You then finally finished reading the first paragraph.

But then you start feeling really bored and you open a new tab and for some reason you type the letter “f” and press the most frequent browsed website, guess what? you just opened Facebook. I’m not going to continue because you know whats going to happen next. My point is, Social Media is always there to lur us to use them at the most unpleasing times. Either is the bright red notification, or the habit of typing “f” or “t”.

But what gets under my skin the most is the feeling of anxiety when I’m not on facebook, twitter or deviantart which then leads to more procrastinating. Why? The feeling of anxiety itself isn’t any good for me. Let’s say I posted something new on deviant art  (a social platform for artists) and once its posted, I would go back doing my work, but after a while an I would get an uneasy feeling and I would think about things like, Did Anyone favorite my post? or Did I get any views? And in a blink, I find myself on deviant art. But it’s not just once, after a while the same thing would happen again and again!

The existence of social media is great, but when it keeps me away from completing my work? It can be surprisingly annoying!

I can feel your pain Sean. I absolutely love social media but HATE the amount of time I waste on it. Even when I’m looking up ways to not procrastinate, I end up procrastinating about how to not procrastinate!

What do you think are some good ways to avoid procrastination?

Maybe you need your mom to sit next to you when you are doing homework.

Loving the ideas you’re throwing here! The same situation also applies to me, social media and procrastination. You mentioned something about anxiety, and I think that it’s a really great point. Sometimes it almost feels like it’s human nature to keep checking our social media, afraid that we’ll miss something new – though the truth is, those notifications won’t go anywhere.

I guess we’ll have to find a solution to this anxiety issue, or procrastination due to social networking will actually be our next “my dog ate my homework”!

Sounds like you have a serious case of FOMO– Fear Of Missing Out. We are all so connected all of the time that when we disconnect, it’s like we go into withdrawal. Then, when you get back online, you lose even more time catching up with what you missed.

    One. Vicious. Cycle.
