What do you think are the reasons for unfair trade?

I think one the reasons for unfair trades happening right now because one of the traders (usually who initiated the trade) wanted more benefit so the person might cheat and disadvantage the person he is trading with, causing an unfair trade.

What does it mean to have equal opportunities?

In this context, I think to have equal opportunities means that each person gets the same chance. For example, if A  gets to know what the conditions of the item he’s trading with that means B is supposed to have the same opportunity A is given. If this is done in each trade and everyone is satisfied with their choices, then I think it would be fine to call it a fair trade.

Why are systems an important part of understanding how things are traded?

Systems is an important part of understanding how things are traded because without a system, there would be a lot of unfair trade which is going to disadvantage a lot of people. A system that humans have invented to make trading easier is money. Nowadays we have a system that makes trading fairer and much more easier. Instead of trading clothes with shoes we all trade with money.
Use the documentary Home and your own ideas to define the term Globalization. How do you think the big idea of Globalization is connected to Fair Trade?

Personally, I think trading have played quite a big role in globalization. Because without trading people won’t know each other’s culture and we won’t be able to know what is going on in other places if we don’t trade information. Trading between people from different countries and ethnic groups have been happening since a long time ago. Trading spices, silk, with other things that the westerners have.

We’ve been learning about different people that have made changes during their own times. I decided to do a case study about Oskar Schindler and made a short video biography about him. Oskar Schindler have made change by saving more than 1000 jews from the Nazi camps. To know more about Schindler, you can watch the video below:

Our unit in Humanities class is propaganda. This is a collage I made out of Kim Jong-il’s propaganda posters with labels of what kind of propaganda technique he used in each poster.

In Humanities class, we’ve been watching a documentary about North Korea called ‘Inside Undercover North Korea’. Before watching this documentary, I actually didn’t know much about North Korea. I was excited about watching this movie because I rarely heard things from North Korea. This documentary was by a brave reporter called Lisa Ling. She went inside North Korea with an eye doctor and went undercover. There, they were acting as a documenter for the doctor’s eye surgery so Lisa Ling was only allowed to record the eye doctor’s surgery.

After watching this documentary I found out how much the North Koreans praise their ‘great leader’ or ‘father’ which is only their own leader, Kim Jong-Il. I have learned how difficult life must be for North Koreans but they didn’t even blame their leader instead they praise him like he is their own god. I think this is unbelievable because Kim Jong-Il had isolated his country, banning cellphones, internet, and other types of media. Impacting North Koreans having limited communication and knowledge about the outside world. However North Koreans still praise him and bow to him.

During the documentary, they also showed the eyes surgeries that the doctor did. The doctor did 1000 cataract surgeries each day for 10 days and after the surgeries, the moment when they finally are able to open their eyes, instead of thanking the doctor they bowed and praised as loud as they can to the picture of the great leader. The reason of this ‘over-praising’ might be because they had brainwashing schools for kids in a young age. They have taught kids that Kim Jong-il is their father, their god, and everything they say is right.

Personally, I think living in a country like that will be really scary and since he is building a really big army, I think the world will collapse just because how much power Kim Jong-Il has right now and how big the army he’s building is.

During this unit, we’ve been studying about rules. This is a presentation about Hammurabi the person that created the first law.

The picture above shows a tap, padlocked. I think it’s located in Africa because most people that is suffering from the lack of water is from Africa. I think maybe they locked it because they have a very limited water and maybe because they want people to pay to the owner to get water. I think we sometimes do need a lock to taps because we might run out of water anytime.
If one day when I got home, and all the water supplies were shut, it will really affect my life. Because I’ve never live in a water-less condition. My family will be panicking, looking for water, or running to the mini markets buying drinkable water. Everyone in my neighborhood might share water and help each other just to get clean water. Maybe some of my relatives will stay in my house because they can’t get any water. This problem will lead to another problem. If we don’t have access to clean water for a long time, we could all get sick. And people might be put out of work because to many people were sick, and kids can’t go to school because their parents don’t have time to. And this problem could lead to death.
This situation is really bad. If they’re in this situation, they would probably look for clean water, but if the water that they could find is undrinkable water, they would get diseases, and people that doesn’t have enough money to get medicine, will eventually die. The lack of water will also affect to the economy and maybe, I’m not sure, will raise the price of food, too. What we could do to conserve water is use water if you need it. I’ve seen some advertisements too, about some kind of a water purifier that could change dirty water to drinkable water, we could maybe use that.

To begin the unit, we made a title page about our second unit, Water for All.

For this natural disasters humanities project, we are working in groups. My group is myself, Ivonne, and Selena. We decided to work on Japan Earthquake that happened in 11 March 2011. So, for the final product, we made a movie… ENJOY~~

It wasn’t the best movie but we worked really hard to make this movie. Please give some comments or some suggestions so I can do a better job next time! thank you ^^

Cars and trucks were everywhere, thrown around like toys. House ruins were everywhere. There were tables, chairs, and all kinds of furnitures scattered around making piles of ruins. People were trying to search for their belongings that was still in good condition. Sounds of people digging the piles to look for their things. Roofs were still falling apart. But some houses were lucky to still stand, even though it wasn’t a whole anymore. Babies crying, dogs were barking. Everybody was really scared because they didn’t know where they’ll live. All they’re belongings are ruined and they didn’t have anything anymore. The dusts from houses covered my skin. It was really terrifying view.

Bam Earthquake

Bam is a city located in Iran. And Iran is the country bordered by Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. The earthquake occurred because the eurasian plate and the arabian plate squashed Iranian plate making the plate break and crash to each other. California, USA is also at high risk of earthquakes. Builders are forced to make buildings earthquake-proof.

Comparing Two Earthquakes
Location Bam, Iran Northridge, USA
Magnitude 6.5 (Richter Scale) 6.7 (Richter Scale)
% Of population killed 43% 9.5%
% Of buildings damaged 70% 20%
Are strict rules in force for seismic-proof buildings? There are no strict rules for seismic-proof buildings and they make their houses using mud bricks that are easy to break. Rules there are very strict and all the buildings are seismic-proof buildings.

But why do people continue to live in natural disaster areas? Some people just don’t have enough money to move to another area that’s safer and some people just don’t care about they’re surroundings. There are also people that have good jobs and good way of life in that area so they don’t want to move. People that live in big cities don’t know where to move to. And in Tokyo and California, where the technology is really good, they rely on the technology and they safe.
