In english class, we’ve been reading a book about refugees called ‘Boy Overboard’. We have to write a letter to someone who we think is responsible. We debated about this problem, and I was on the ‘against’ side. So, I decided to write a letter to the PM, Ms. Julia Gillard . Here is my letter:

Dear Ms. Julia Gillard,

My name is Sherry Novanka Tania and I’m a student from Sinarmas World Academy. Many people think that it’s Australia’s responsibility to take care of the refugees. Nonetheless, think about all the problems they would cause if we keep letting refugees into Australia.

Personally, I think that refugees should not be let into Australia. Although Australia is one of the active members in the UN, letting in the refugees could cause problems such as tax, racism conflict, and crimes. Therefore, please do think about the problems these refugees could cause.

To begin with, let’s talk about taxes. A lot of refugees are being let in to Australia everyday. They go to Australia to seek asylum, to have a better life and a better home. To have a better life and a good home they need money. Moreover, In most cases, refugees don’t have any money when they get to Australia. This means that the government of Australia have to spend tax money on the refugees. It’s not only shelter and food the government have to spend the tax money on, their kids also need proper education and medical care. However, I think that it is not fair for the Australians because they were the one who paid tax money to the government so they can make Australia a better place for the citizens.

Furthermore, most refugees that Australia is letting in are from Muslim countries like, Afghanistan, Irak, Iran, and Somalia. We all know that a lot of conflicts have been going on between the the west culture and the Muslim culture. A similar case that has been going on in France. In France, the government banned women from wearing burqa that triggers demonstrations by the immigrants. The same problem could happen in Australia. And when more Muslim refugees come to Australia, the demonstrations will get bigger and bigger and riots will begin. Australia will be in a chaotic situation. Another case is in Indonesia. A riot happened between the Chinese and the Muslims that was caused by job problems. Well, It is sometimes true that combining two different cultures can benefit us in different aspects, though a lot of conflicts  will follow it. Besides, I am pretty sure that you don’t want Australia in a chaotic state.

In addition, refugees that we are letting in are doing crimes in Australia because refugees that moved in to Australia came from a country in a war condition that has no strict laws. It takes time for the refugees to adapt to a country like Australia. These crimes will increase the amount of criminals in Australia, making the citizens feel unsafe. Again, Australia have strict laws, and for the younger ones, they probably never experience a life with law which increases the possibility of doing crime. As an example, a 19 year old Somali refugee did an armed robbery with violence  and another Somali that did 2 knife attacks. These crimes are very dangerous for the Australians and should not be happening and will never happen if we stop letting in the refugees.

In conclusion, I think that the refugees should not be let in to Australia because they would cause so much problems and they have a lot of negative impacts to the citizens. Even though I’m Indonesian and you may think that it is non of my problems, but I think it is a big problem that needs to be solved. Again I repeat, we should not let them in. Think again. Do you want Australia to be in a chaotic state? Do you want to be accused of stealing money from the Australians? Do you want more crimes happening in Australia? Do you want more problems? I hope you can think about my opinions and thoughts. Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Sherry Novanka Tania

I stretched myself after my long sleep. My bedroom wasn’t big just a messy standard one. My stuff were scattered around my room like chocolate, sweets, and snacks. And next to my bed, was my dog with its gold fur was laying down on his bed shutting his eyes quietly while hugging a toy tightly in his paws.

I peeked outside my window through the gaps of the curtains; the sun was an old lady giving a warm tight hug to the planet with light and the clouds were old men flying slowly in the sky blowing fresh air. I opened my window and an old man brought the breeze into my room weakly from the outside world. The molecules of the cool air were exploring through the microscopic gaps in my skin. So, I grabbed the doorknob, twisted it really carefully and quietly tiptoed out of the room and went outside.

I was sitting on my swing in front of my porch, when that breeze slapped me. Blowing my shiny black hair softly. That day was peaceful; only the sound of the colliding trees I could hear. My plants danced to the wind and the dry leaves were floating in the air falling to the ground. That day was quiet; no disruption on anyways. The damp grass was tickling me softly while I watch the clouds move as they make funny shapes while eating my cookies. My cookies were chocolaty and sweet; it was so delicious. The clouds were like a floating show with a background song of the birds singing. The trees danced, entertaining me quietly. I shut my eyes tried to feel the breeze, then I fell asleep.

I woke up because of my dog. It jumped on me like a pouncing lion. There were so much pressure on me until it was hard to breath. He licked my face like I was his yummy tempting breakfast that is ready to be eaten. He left me with my wet slimy face. I wiped my face with my shirt then started to chase him. I started running, and chasing him like a hungry cheetah chasing its prey. I grabbed him and pulled him near me then I roared showing my canines means that I was ready for my lunch. He ran away trying to get away from me. I laughed so loud like an evil hyena and I had so much fun playing chasing with him.

My dog went into the house and then suddenly, I heard my dog starting to whimper. His whimper sounds like he was suffering like a bird with a broken wing. I went into the house, and the inside part of the house was a dead dark house with no sign of life. It was as quiet as a graveyard. I looked around and my eyes could spot that the back door was wide open.

I ran quickly outside to my backyard and there were still no sign of him. It was dead silent like the rhythm of a dead heart. So cold and it was getting dark it was the end of the world. No barks, no stomps, there was nothing in my backyard, only plants moving around being blew away by the wind, telling me to go away. I went back to my porch, panicking, my brain was chaos and I couldn’t control a thing.

I stared on every single angle and there were still no sign of my dog.  I sat down then I burst out into tears; I told myself to calm down and insisted my self that somebody has sneaked into the house and had taken him. I sat on the swing waiting for my dog. I still don’t know what happened.

I sat there for a long time. And finally I could feel the wonderful cool breeze again. The flowers started blooming again everything was back as usual, even though my dog wasn’t there with me spending the day with me, I finally could recover after the best and the worst day.
