Unit 3 – Film Reading
During this unit, we watched the movie E.T that was directed by a famous director called Steven Spielberg. After watching the movie we made a director’s cut, choosing one 5 minute scene from the movie. Making the director’s cut wasn’t difficult for me but to analyze each shot I have to be really detailed. If you want to see the post about this click here. And you also can watch the director’s cut below.
Our unit question was: How do Directors create mood and suspense? and the our Areas of Interaction was about growing up. After finishing this unit, I finally can answer the unit question. Directors create mood and suspense by using a variety of shots, camera effects, settings, and background song. I found the answer during the editing of the movie that I’m going to talk about below.
Before making the movie, we were divided into 3 different groups. And I ended up working with Melissa, Bonita, and Cindy. After some discussion, we have decided to make a movie about a girl that was scared of a duck that had ruined her birthday party in the past and then met the duck again. We started making this movie by storyboarding that took a lot of effort, and then start shooting the movie. What I find really challenging during the shooting process was the time limit. It is really hard for us to act with the duck since it’s scary and we only had a few days to shoot. My group ended up removing some scenes/shots from the movie because when we got to the set, we found out that it was impossible to shoot.
I think our movie is really good in a cinematography point of view. Even though the story of our movie doesn’t really make sense, I believe that the shots that we did were taken in a really good angle.
We also had to be really creative with the shots and things like that because during the shooting we have to make a lot of improvements. Another thing we had to overcome was the camera differences and the quality of each camera we were using was different making some shots really awkward in color so we had to adjust it. But overall I think we did a really good job on the movie even though the storyline wasn’t that good.
I think this unit was really fun. I learned a lot of things about shots and even though I think we got a bit off track, however this unit is my favorite so far.
Other than that, we also had a daily shoot project. In the daily shoot project we learn how to take pictures in an angle with good lighting and framing. The project ended on the 30th picture. And from all the pictures I took, these are my favorite because they’re both taken from a good angle and the lighting is so good even though I didn’t edit these.
