DC101- Digital Citizenship: Talk Tech Get Connected
As you may have heard, our new eHub platform is in the early stages of rolling out. As an IT team, we couldn’t be more thrilled by the excitement and enthusiasm you, as a staff, have shown to get started. While we need to be patient and go slowly with our school system, we do not want to lose the early momentum you are generating.
We just completed the first cohort of an after school course called, “DC101- Digital Citizenship: Talk Tech Get Connected,” The hope was that this course will arm you with the same skill-set and theoretical knowledge you will need to be successful with the new system. The course will help you learn:
- How to use the WordPress blogging platform
- How to use blogging to build a personal/professional portfolio
- How to use social networks to connect with other teachers through the use of a Professional Learning Network
- An understanding of educational technology pedagogy and theory
- An understanding of connected learning and the tools that make it possible
- Basics of Digital Storytelling
In short, we have created a learning community to help us, as a staff, navigate the world of digital citizenship, by using hands on sessions for the development of blogs and other tools, as well as readings and discussions about current technology issues affecting education. All of these skills and understandings will be included in our professional development plan during school hours, but we have created this course as a way to satiate your intense interest and to help you get on board as the infrastructure is getting ready.
This course can be a great way for you to meet your school-wide or personal IT goals. It will run for six weeks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:00pm to 4:30pm! Expected start date is January 18th and 19th. It is open to all staff, and administrators are encouraged to come as well. (Hint, hint.) Take a look at the Google Doc outline for more details here.

Below you will find a Google form asking a few questions to help us best structure the course to your needs. Warning: I was told to mention that this form could take you about 15 mins to complete, so come back if you are in a hurry. If you have any questions, please leave them as a comment below or email Jabiz directly.
I have asked participants form the first cohort to leave some comments about the course below, so please take a look in the comments of this post.

It was so good to be able to attend the very productive after school activity like this. I am not that blind anymore about blogging! I am not that scared anymore when someone asked me about how to upload pictures and movies onto the blog. I can edit some pictures with more colorful and interesting stuff. The course is definitely well prepared for us.
Terima Kasih!

I sat somewhere between student and coach in the DC101 sessions (OK, way closer to the student end). I could already do the basics so it was the conversations that I found envigorating. Why should we blog? What is our unique voice? What is a digital citizen and how can we be a responsible DC? Without the “big picture”, blogging just becomes mechanical and a little pointless. I look forward to the final get-together of DC101 in January.
I have been half-heartedly blogging for about 18 months now, even so, I still learned lots of new skills on the DC101 course and have felt considerably more at ease at putting my ideas and thoughts out there for the world to see and as Jabiz puts it, ‘tell my story’. Basically, there are not enough hours in the day to write the blog posts that I’d like to write.
Jabiz (and DC101 team) showed us some wonderful resources and gently nudged us to push ourselves. I am sure I will be able to use the skills I learned on a frequent basis.
Thanks so much to everyone! It was well worth the time I invested in the course.
