The HS Halloween Masquerade Party on 2 November, was the most successful event this year.  Since Halloween is one of the biggest parties of the year and our school did not have the Halloween Party last year, there was a great effort made to set up the party this year.  The party took place at the Arts Center and Zheng He buildings from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm.  The Arts Gallery turned into a spooky party hall for all the students to enjoy various activities including dance, horror maze, recreational games, and award ceremonies.  Large numbers of high school students came to the party and had great fun.  The night passed on with glitz and amusement.  The High School Student Council would like to say a big “thank-you” to Mr. Brian Jackson for being a great DJ on the night; all the teacher chaperones; PTA for supporting this event and all those students who came and enjoyed the party.

On Tuesday 4 December, the Elementary School including the Early Years students, celebrated Indonesian Culture Day. The students and teachers dressed up in Indonesian traditional clothes and took part in a costume parade as part of the school assembly.

This event was the culmination of the ES Indonesian Department program of ‘Sumpah Pemuda’.  This celebrates the Indonesian youth of the past who, with the spirit of ‘Bhinneka Tunggal Ika’ (Unity in Diversity), declared themselves to have ONE language and ONE nation under ONE country of Indonesia.  For that reason, students from different grade levels inquired into different cultures and ethnic groups of Indonesia for over the past months.  They shared their new knowledge of various elements of the cultures through exhibitions, presentations and performances in the school assembly.  Each grade level had took turns to visit and present to others as well.

The day ended with the students and teachers participating in a traditional game called ‘Margala’ in the Sport Center.  This game originally came from Batak (North Sumatra) and is just one of the Indonesian traditional games learned by Grade 4 students.  When the games finished, all students and teachers gathered to sing the Indonesian national anthem, ‘Indonesia Raya’.

It was a great day to celebrate and acknowledge the spirit of ‘Unity in Diversity’.

Halloween proved to be a wonderful opportunity for our students to show some school spirit.  In each of the ES school sections, people dressed up in the spirit of the event and then paraded for parents and fellow students.  It was also fun to see the teachers joining in on the fun.
