The Mighty Macan Club did it again!

Yet, another successful intramural.  This time, it was the High School Futsal Intramural from 4 – 8 March 2013 during lunchtime.  There was a total of 5 teams competing against each other to win gold medals for first place!  It was intense and the crowd consisted of both High and Middle Schoolers.  They watched in awe while they’re biting their nails with nervousness.  The crowd roared when the ending victory went to Jonathan’s team (boys winners) and Won’s team (girls winners).  They will receive gold medals at the upcoming High School Assembly.  The teams who came in second place will get gold pins.

Middle Schoolers, wait for the next intramural, Futsal Tournament starting on 15 April!

SWA Girls are Jakarta Schools Football League (JSFL) Champions

Congratulations to all the SWA girls for a remarkable season culminating in winning the JSFL, going through the season undefeated.  The team has come a long way in 2 years and we should be proud of all its achievements.

Coaches Miss Tracey and Mr. Gavin have done a fantastic job creating such an enthusiastic, skillful team.  Well done everyone!

Warriors Exhibition Match

Boys basketball players had the experience of a lifetime recently, having received a special invitation to participate in an exhibition match on the main court before the Indonesia Warriors game.  When you are 15 or 16 years old and love basketball, days really don’t get much better than this.

A big thanks to our coaches Mr. Paul and Mr. Justin for all their support!!

Jakarta Arts and Athletics Conference (JAAC)

Mr. Derek from SWA will take over as Chairperson of the Jakarta Arts and Athletics Conference commencing in June 2014.

Jakarta Arts and Athletics Conference (JAAC) comes to Elementary school.

Great news for our Elementary School students.

Jakarta Arts and Athletic Conference (JAAC) comes to Elementary School.

Wednesday 16 January saw the first meeting of JAAC schools focused on creating inter school sporting opportunities for students in Elementary School.

An agreement was made that the school year will be divided into seasons targeting certain sports.  The idea is that students will learn and train in periods leading up to an exciting end of season tournament.

It all starts with Team Handball on 4 May 2013 – This is a team sport that will be totally new to most of our students, but this is the perfect team sport for Elementary students.  It has elements of basketball and football and can be learned at its basic level in a short period of time.  Unlike basketball at Elementary School level, Team Handball is a high scoring fast moving game.

At the end of this year if you ask any of our students in Grades 4 and 5 what is the most exciting game they have played, I guarantee a lot of them will be saying, “Team Handball”

In this season of basketball it has been a joy ride of many ups and downs.  We faced a lot of problems: trying to get members to show up for practice, and towards the end, even just figuring out who was still in the team was difficult.  Many more problems were faced, but in the end here we are, winning 1st place for improvement!  Given the effort of our small, broken group, I think we did a good job.  Personally, I see that our team has room for so much more improvement because individually we all play so well; there is a lot of potential in the team.  Miss Claudia, our coach, sees that too and that is probably why she is so tough on all of us.  Sometimes I understand why people get so scared and frustrated with her, but she does mean well and she has been a great coach for us.  Because of her passion and drive, our defense, by the end of the rocky season, has grown to be much stronger.  We didn’t do much on ‘man-to-man’ strategies, because of our weak and fatigued physical condition.  However, our zone defense is much stronger and more united.  This is just one of the many examples of how we have made slight improvements though we still lost some games.  In the JAAC tournament we pushed JIS right until the end and only lost narrowly.  This was a big improvement and again we only just lost to GJIS in the final game.  The few of us who constantly showed up to the practices became the main core of the team and in all honesty, we weren’t half bad.  All we need is a bit more practice, dedication, and commitment.  For most of us, there’s still always next year to try and try again.  A rocky season this has been, but as the saying goes, “diamonds are formed from rocks under pressure.” We would like to thank our coaches, Miss Claudia and Mr. Gavin, and we WILL be back next year stronger and more enthusiastic.
