For your summative assessment, you will be writing a narrative story about a natural disaster from the point of view of a survivor (we’ll get to that in a few class periods when I assign and go over the story task with you). To help you get started with this, we will be reading some personal narratives that were written by some students in Japan after the earthquake last spring.

The two that we will be reading today are:

Emily in 6C (YIS)

Monica in G10- “Someone Else” (YIS)

Both are narratives about what happened on the day of the earthquake, and are written by students at Yokohama International School. Please read both of the stories, then answer the following questions on your blogs:

1.) Did you find these stories interesting and entertaining? Explain.

2.) Did knowing that these stories are real and told by other students make them more interesting to read? Explain.

3.) What characteristics of narrative stories did you see in these stories while you read them?

4.) Did reading these stories give you any ideas about how you might write your own narrative story for the assessment? Explain how.

5.) Do you think that you have a better idea of how a survivor of a natural disaster might use writing to describe their experience? Explain.

I look forward to reading your answers!

Please  use the same title and tags for your post as this one!

Since all of my classes are focusing on writing a narrative story for your summative assessments, I thought that I would help you out with a quick little reminder of what a narrative story actually IS! So, below is a visual to remind you of the traits of narrative writing. Please look at it before you begin planning or editing your stories.

And, as always, if you need help or have questions, please let me know!
